North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC), one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario, partnered with ɫֱ to launch a surgical remote monitoring platform to increase same day surgery, enhance patient experience, improve clinical outcomes, and enable safer transitions from hospital to home for its patient populations.
Since the initial launch of ɫֱ in early 2022, NBRHC has deployed Digital Care Journeys across a total of eight care pathways – Breast, Colorectal, Hernia, Hip, Hysterectomy, Knee, Shoulder, and Urology – and has across these service lines, including:
↓ 78% in 30-day Readmissions
↓ 54% in 30-day ED Visits
↓ 50% in Length of Stay
✓ 66% of patients reported ɫֱ prevented 1+ calls to the hospital
With the ongoing success of the program, NBRHC is now actively implementing ɫֱ for patients undergoing C-sections.
As Chantal Voyer, Director of Surgery and Inpatient Services at NBRHC, shared, “ɫֱ has been a terrific partner in helping us deliver our hospital’s strategy to provide a cutting edge, digital experience throughout the patient journey to ultimately reduce ED visits, hospital length of stay, and readmission rates.”
By providing access to a digital patient engagement solution that enables their patients to seamlessly navigate through their perioperative care journey, NBRHC has also enhanced patient experience and education while reducing surgical anxiety – which furthers their goal of same-day surgery.
NBRHC boasts a 94% activation rate, with more than 52,994 library pages viewed on the platform in the past 12 months alone. The provider also reported that:
✓ 95% of patients would recommend ɫֱ
✓ 99% found the information easy to read
✓ 88% felt ɫֱ helped them feel less worried before surgery
“I felt confident that if I needed outside reassurance or information, it was just a phone call away. It also kept me on my toes to do my exercises and self assessment as time went on post surgery. I feel strong and healthy and feel I am ready to deal with the next steps in my recovery from breast cancer,” shared an NBRHC patient.
ɫֱ collaborated with a broad interdisciplinary team at NBRHC to customize protocols and content on the clinically-validated Digital Care Journey platform. Patients were engaged through the app-based virtual companion to guide them across their perioperative journey – via multimedia education, reminders, symptom tracking, and more.
Meanwhile, care teams were able to remotely monitor recovery progress and patient compliance, digitally collect Patient Reported outcomes (PROs), automate self-care guidance via smart algorithms and workflows, receive alerts and monitor dashboards to intervene faster for at-risk patients, as well as provide personalized care recommendations to improve patient outcomes.
